Not only is it my birthday, but also Matt Damon’s.

posted on 10.08.09 I'm 25 today.

At a certain point, there isn’t really anything all that spectacular about turning another year older, but it does make you pause and think about what you have and haven’t accomplished over the last 12 months.

24 was a tumultuous year. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced so many ups and downs in such a short amount of time:

I was unemployed for a good portion of the year, which caused a kind of stress that I had never known before and I hope to never experience again.

I winged an interview with a celebrity. I thought it was going to land me a job at my internship… but it didn’t. It did, however, just get published last month.

I took a free trip to DisneyWorld courtesy of my magazine internship and learned that there is no way to fit a giant Mickey Mouse into my duffle bag, no matter how hard I try.

Remember when I worked at a gelato stand? Yeah… that was weird.

I survived unemployment and found a job that I truly love, working with a fantastic group of people I can’t get enough of.

I got an iPhone. Oh, did I *ever* get an iPhone.

I fell pretty hard, both for someone and, also, onto a sidewalk. Experienced a bit of heartache on both occasions. I’ve got the scars to prove it.

I found a happy-go-lucky version of myself that I had no idea existed. She exists primarily on the phone, talking to customers who are pissed off as shit.

I rediscovered my love of taking pictures, with the help of a long lost camera.

I started running on a regular basis.

I ate a LOT of macaroni and cheese.

I went to a LOT of shows at the UCB.

I improvised in hundreds of scenes; some that made me feel like I could fly, others that made me feel like I should give up and go home - meeting some wonderfully funny improvisers and making some great friends along the way.

It was a great year - bad things happened, sure, but some good things happened, too, and I learned a lot about myself. And no one can say it was boring. Or unfunny.

Here’s hoping that year 25+ will be just as eventful - with, maybe, a bit more comedy and a lot less unemployment.

posted on 10.06.09 CNN "fact-checks" SNL's Obama skit and hilarious #CNNFactCheck hashtag emerges

My personal favorite:

@JoshSamBob Christopher Walken is actually quite good at guesstimating. #CNNFactCheck

randyhaddock:

The inherent hilarity and absurdity of a supposedly news organization fact-checking a comedy skit is what gave way to the Twitter hashtag called #CNNFactCheck, where tweeps take on the serious task of fact-checking some classic SNL skits and other non-SNL material.

Here are a few:

@pcbyers Dayna Carvey did not actually know the lady who was choppin broccoli. #CNNFactCheck

@EnasYorl “Wayne’s World” was not really a public access cable show. #CNNfactcheck

@thecomeback After checking every river in America, we have not been able to find a motivational speaker living in a van. #CNNfactcheck

@CalebHowe #CNNFactCheck finds that 999,999 women do NOT think “D*** in a Box” is a good gift. Which proves the perfect woman really IS 1 in a million.

@diggrbiii “He is not, in fact, Brian Fellow. Despite his very loud proclamations, it’s just Tracy Morgan.” #CNNFactCheck

@jimmiebjr CNN has obtained a statement from the CDC advising that “more cowbell” is never an appropriate cure for a fever. #CNNFactCheck

@jkfecke In fact, Blue Öyster Cult never included a cowbell player named Gene Frenkle.— the musician didn’t exist. #CNNFactCheck

@freemanhunt Neither Dan Aykroyd nor Steve Martin ever resided in former Czechoslovakia, & neither is particularly wild or crazy. #CNNFactCheck

@effdobbs Schwetty Balls were actually made out of animal parts, not from the male human anatomy #CNNFactCheck

@ORourkian After an exhaustive study, CNN has discovered Jake & Elwood’s last name wasn’t Blues and they weren’t really brothers. #CNNfactcheck

@mitrebox Despite VP Biden’s claims CNN finds you can actually go to 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts w/o an Indian accent #CNNFactCheck

@pow127 #CNNFactCheck finds that Dr Dre is not licensed to practice medicine of any kind. #psa

And my favorite:

@andylevy That wasn’t really Obama - it was actor Fred Armisen! #CNNFactCheck

Moments - Will Hoffman

I’ve become a big WNYC’s Radiolab fan over the past few months (thanks to a podcast suggestion from @trappedinawell). Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich do a fantastic job of discussing scientific data and studies while also considering some of the philosophical and moral implications and the “human experience” - and still making it palatable on a morning commute.

This 4-minute video was featured a few weeks ago as a short on the Radiolab podcast as a part of their series on the themes ‘After Life’ and ‘After Birth.’ It was beautifully done and fit in seamlessly with their topic.

I highly recommend making Radiolab a part of your weekly listening - I can’t get enough of it.

As an Alaskan, I’d just like to let you know that this sort of thing - amazing special effects and Kenny Loggins - is pretty much what you can expect from us all the time.
